hurl: tarte x grav3yardgirl swamp queen palette

hi guys! this swamp family member was finally able to get her phalanges on the swamp queen palette today!!! it was so close yet so far on saturday...and then yesterday was a holiday.............. i've been watching bunny's videos for maybe a year or two now, and get most of the references to the shade names, except for a few...but i'm not watching her hour-long video talking about the palette...who has time for that, especially since i ordered the palette before that video even went up.. click photos to view larger! ~Lin-chan ^.~
anyway! omg this palette. it is beautiful. fan of grav3yardgirl or not, you should definitely check it out. the pigmentation is freaking phenomenal and will work with fair to medium skintones (maybe darker, but i'm not sure by how much..). these shadows are super gorgeous, most containing some kind of sparkle, and a few satins. the bronzer, i'm a bit on the fence about because of the sparkle, but the rest of the palette makes up for it. the included brush seems like it will be a pretty good, stiff flat shader brush.

believe in yourself, love yourself, embrace your individuality
cheeks
  1. sweet tea -- this is a more orangey-brown bronzer shade, with gold shimmer. it does kind of look like iced tea, not gonna lie, "sippy sippy...ahhhh!". but i'm not sure how this will go on me because it's so orange, but i can try using it other ways.
  2. does this thing really work? -- this blush reminds me of nars orgasm. now, orgasm is a lot pinker than this, where this is more rosy-mauve, and it also has some golden shimmer to it.
  3. gator wings -- this is super pretty! it's reminiscent of becca moonstone, but more yellow-gold, and appears to have multi-colored shimmer to it.

sweet tea, does this thing really work?, gator wings
eyes
  1. #sfs -- well, since i'm on the dupe train... manna kadar's shadow/highlight in fantasy that i got in my ipsy bag is very similar to this. this is a really pretty peachy-pink golden shimmery shadow.
  2. natural peaches -- this is one of the satins, and it's a really nice orangy-peach transition shade. i'm not sure with my skintone if i can pull it off full-color, but i can see this working really well sheered out.
  3. dogman -- i'm not sure if i 100% feel like this would be dogman's 'color' but i guess, relative to the others..maybe? anyway, this is a really interesting shade. it's a satin finish rusty color with multi-colored shimmer. i'm not sure how much use i'd get out of this shade but if i do, it'll probably be something i blend a lot and will probably lose the glitteriness.
  4. big baby -- can you even see this one on my skin?? i had to swatch this one a few times to get it to show up. it is basically my skin color, maybe leaning slightly orange. this is the other satin/matte shade in this palette. which will work really well as a brow highlight.
  5. sassy bun -- "so sassy, sassy saaaassy!" omg you guys. this is one of the prettiest metallic coppery golds ever. cannot waiiiiit to use it!
  6. sippy sippy -- this is another that i'm not so sure i'd envision as the name...but whatever. this is a very dark chocolate brown, satin finish with multi-colored shimmer. like i said with dogman, if i ever end up using it, the pretty shimmeriness will get lost in the blending probably.
  7. haunting -- omg you guys, can i get a larger one of these as a single?? this is such a pretty lilacy-nudey-pink with tons of multi-colored shimmer. this one does seem fairly appropriately named, i mean, it's a ghoulish color!
  8. uncommon -- also, can i get this as a hyooj single??? this is probably my absolute favorite shade in this palette. contrary to the fact that i'm not as interested in the uncommon objects hauls--those are kinda weird..but ughhhh! i know why i love this shade so much. it's another take on urban decay's liar (naked 3), and slightly less so, inglot 402. this is such a pretty mauvey taupe shade with tons of sparkle and shine. looooove it.
  9. mancat -- this is a very nice deep purple with a satin finish. i don't see myself using it much, maybe in the outer corner or lower lash line, but i'm not sure.

#sfs, natural peaches, dogman, big baby, sassy bun, sippy sippy, haunting, uncommon, mancat (swatched over lorac eye primer)

may hauls & favorites

hi guys!! it's been another one of those busy months, so i'm tacking my favorites onto here instead of making a separate post since there's only a few things...

sheer rapture, arm swatch: 1 swipe, 3 swipes

target: they have naturebox snacks now!! w00t!

favorites:
  1. theBalm down boy blush -- i think in the past month or two, i mentioned that i was trying to go through my stash (or maybe just the blushes...) because i have been buying stuff, swatching it, and not using it. swatches aren't a true teller of whether you like something or not, you've got to try putting it on your face! so anyway, i can't remember when i bought this and i'm too lazy to look in the blog..but i've been really enjoying using this with a fluffy sigma F40.
  2. naturebox snacks -- so excited that i got these at target. they're all super yum and i can't wait to get more!

may empties & makeup graveyard

hi guys! it's empties time~! it's mostly skincare this time, and a few makeup things. ~Lin-chan ^.~
  1. sonia kashuk eye makeup remover
  2. holika holika pig nose blackhead mask
  3. maybelline matte + poreless foundation in 120
  4. simple cleansing wipes x2
  5. tony moly my little pet eye patches
  6. parian spirit
  7. belif true cream aqua bomb
  8. benefit roller lash mascara
  9. jack black lip balm in natural mint
  10. lorac porefection mattifying primer -- i don't remember if i put this in a previous empties before. prior to this tube, i always liked the deluxe samples of this product. and some time before i bought this tube, i realised that it's more cost effective per ounce to buy this than too faced's primed and poreless.
    repurchase? maybe later
  11. boscia charcoal pore minimizing hydrogel mask -- this was an interesting mask; i really enjoyed the gel texture and consistency of it. this comes saturated in serum (there's a lot left over after pulling the mask out) and it is in two pieces. they cut this mask in a lot of places, in an attempt to custom fit everyone better. unfortunately for me, the nose part was a bit long and wide, so it was awkward in my inner eye area and tip of nose. otherwise, i really enjoyed how well this mask fit and stayed on my face. i'm not really sure i feel like this did anything aside from feeling really nice while wearing... so i'll probably pass on getting another.
    repurchase? nah
  12. estee lauder advanced night repair eye synchronized complex II -- i really enjoyed this eye product, so much so that i redeemed sephora points for another. does it do what it says? i don't really know, lol, but i liked the texture and feel of it.
repurchase? it's kind of expensive, so probably not
  13. ion moisturizing treatment -- while this did work well as a deep conditioner, the formula was kind of meh, and the packaging was pretty annoying and difficult to dispense toward the end.
    repurchase? nah
  14. tree hut lychee & plum sugar scrub -- i'm not sure if it was just this jar, but the sugar granules were a lot more coarse (larger) than their other scrubs, but not necessarily more effective. scent-wise this was really yummy.
    repurchase? nah
  15. the body shop tea tree oil -- so i'm not sure if this is really any different from tea tree oil from other brands, but i went ahead and got this a long ways back and finally decided to use it. i hate the stopper in this bottle, so i pulled it out and would dip a q-tip into it to apply it. i will say though that it's not avisable to pull the stopper out and travel with the bottle, but i really enjoyed using this and i've already bought a few more!
    repurchase? yes
  16. shea moisture sensitive skin mud mask with peace rose oil complex sample -- you guys know i hate rose oil or rose scented things......this was actually pleasant to use. the rosiness went away within a minute or two and didn't smell like much of anything afterward. after washing it off, my face felt really nice and comfortable afterward.
    repurchase? maybe
    1. sidenote: this was a sample i received from pinchme.com*, where you can get samples for free for your review. and it's just a short survey on their site, no need to blog or anything!
[not pictured]
  1. secret ph balanced deodorant in shower fresh
  2. soap & glory clean on me shower gel
  3. bliss fabulous foaming face wash
  4. skindinavia oil control setting spray

makeup graveyard
  1. em cosmetics lip gloss/lipstick pans -- these came in the various life palette & mini life palettes i've gotten, but these are starting to get pretty gross...so they need tossing.
  2. em cosmetics the great cover up concealer in light neutral/cool -- this ended up going on the backburner and i didn't really use it very much. i'm not sure if part of it was because it wasn't 100% my correct shade.. but this doesn't smell right, so it needs to go too.

influenster #SproutVoxBox review

hi guys! i was chosen yet again to receive an influenster* voxbox!! this box contains a few 'healthy', 'natural', or 'earth friendly' products. and today, i bring you my review! ~Lindsay-chan ^.~
  1. curate dark & tempting snack bar -- this was a very interesting snack bar. i was kind of unsure about the flavor combo, but it really worked together. the taste was great, the figs were sweet, and there was some tanginess from the orange peel and balsamic vinegar. and texturally, it crumbled a bit due to the nuts and quinoa. overall, i enjoyed this.
    repurchase? maybe
  2. clairol hair food moisture shampoo & conditioner -- i've said this many a time on here, moisturizing shampoos and i don't get along. but this one was an exception somehow. usually moisturizing shampoos make me super oily-greasy within a few hours. i did not have that issue whatsoever with this product. the conditioner was like any other that i like using, made my hair soft and shiny. scent-wise, both the shampoo & conditioner had a light, unoffensive smell.
    repurchase? probably not
  3. ecos laundry detergent in magnolia & lily -- first and foremost, i'm pretty biased against this brand. my in-laws keep buying this stuff (in lavender from sams club) because it's dye free and natural and whatever the hell. me personally (and teh paul), i cannot stand using their detergent, ever. our clothes don't smell, look, or feel clean when using that stuff. when using the lavender detergent on heavily soiled clothing, the clothes don't feel clean, and still reek. so before even trying this i wasn't too sure about it. knowing that this detergent does not work well with heavily soiled or super sweaty clothes and intentionally used it on lightly soiled clothing. this detergent had a light floral fragrance when sniffing it directly. after using it, our clothes felt clean but didn't smell like anything (not a 'clean laundry scent' you get from other detergents).
    repurchase? hells no
  4. orgain organic protein powder in vanilla bean -- you guys, i'm such a fitness junkie that needs protien powder with every workout. LOL. yeah right. so i haven't had many other protein powders prior to this one, but this was ok. i'm not sure i could have distinguished it as vanilla bean vs regular vanilla..... but anyway. as far as its benefits, i can't say for sure that i got much out of it, aside from feeling a bit full after drinking it...mixed in whole milk because i'm a fatty. ^___^
    repurchase? no
  5. eatsmart snacks garlic hummus three bean tortilla chips -- these were pretty good. eaten plain, there was a fairly strong garlic flavor, not so much hummus exactly... and we tried it with medium salsa and it was as if i was using a regular tortilla chip, couldn't detect that it was flavored. texturally, it was about the same as regular tortilla chips.
    repurchase? nah

5th hellofresh box

hi guys! sorry this post is a few days late. work this week has been awful and i haven't had a chance to breathe. anyway onto the food!

here's our fifth hellofresh box! we ended up getting this 'third' box after this groupon because of the credit we ended up getting from the leaky chicken in the 'first' box we received. this will be our last for a now as we have canceled the subscription. the meals we chose this time are:
  1. Warm Shrimp and Farro Salad
  2. Turkish Lamb Meatballs
  3. Marinated Steak Bibimbap
for recipes of these three dishes, see my HelloFresh recipes folder on my google drive. ~Lin-chan ^.~
dinner 1: shrimp & farro salad
so aside from the fact that teh paul forgot the arugula in the salad spinner until like an hour after we finished eating......... it was really good! haha. we're planning on making this again, once we make a trip to trader joe's to buy more farro. he and i both agreed, to some degree, we liked the farro more than brown rice since it's fluffier.

    dinner 2: turkish lamb meatballs
this was teh yumz. the meatballs somehow ended up tasting like gyro (yes, i know lamb is in gyro, but still), and the sauce was sweet and tangy. the only issues we foresee with making this again is obtaining ground lamb and turkish spice blend. maybe whole foods and the internets, respectively? i'm not sure.
-- to anyone interested in making this in the future, the "1 box" of crushed tomatoes is about 13.8oz, and "1 stock concentrate" is about 8oz of stock

    dinner 3: steak bibimbap
can i first start off with, why is the soyu in a jar... who puts it into a jar when it can be in a teeny bottle?? didn't one of my previous food subscription boxes have super cute little soy sauce fishies??? and secondly, i don't think i've ever seen sriracha in packettes before. not that i ever use it, but i thought it was..different. anyway, this came out really good! it uses simple, easily obtainable ingredients and it was fairly easy to make! can't wait to do it again!

    may 2016: sephora play!

hi guys! it's been a few days since i got my may sephora play! box (theme: the forces of nature), but i've finally got the time to post about it! ~Lin-chan ^.~

    kimchi

    latergram
    1. bite beauty amuse bouche lipstick in kimchi (.05oz--mini, $26 for .15oz [$8.67]) -- so is it bad that i think this lipstick photographs really well, but in real life it looks kind of crazy?? anyway, i do like this shade but maybe toned down somehow? i'm not a huge fan of the formula change but this is only my first lipstick since then. like this lipstick more than my others sinks into the cracks/flakes and fine lines in my lips, this shade in particular has some staining power, and the new formulation doesn't feel as buttery when you apply it.
      repurchase? not this shade
    2. korres wild rose sleeping facial (.34oz--mini, ret. $48 for 1.35oz [$12.09]) -- i'm going to give this away. first off, rose. second: sleeping facial. i hate rose scented things, and i'm not totally sure how i feel about lotion-like masks that you put on before going to bed and washing off in the morning.
      repurchase? no
    3. tarte tarteist lip crayon in latergram (.001oz--mini, ret. $18 for .01oz [$1.80]) -- while i really like the shade, using this teeny sample is weird. i'm not sure if the full size is like this, but this mini is one of those retractable pencils that once you twist up, it won't go back down...so that kind of sucks. second since this thing was tiny and thin, it kept breaking and took several non-consecutive clicks to apply it over my lips. the formula's a bit dry, but still glided on with ease.
      repurchase? undecided
    4. briogeo don't despair, repair! (1oz--mini, ret. $36 for 8oz [$4.50]) -- got this in an ipsy bag a ways back, and it's an ok product. more like a regular conditioner than a 'deep' conditioner.
      repurchase? nah
    5. origins maskimizer spray, clear improvement mask, drink up intensive mask (samples, ret. $22 for 3.2oz (spray); $26 for 3.4oz (masks)) -- i'll have to check out this spray and 'intensive mask'. the clear improvement mask is actually a pretty good product. i've been slowly going through a previously obtained sample of it.
repurchase? maybe the clear improvement mask, undecided about the other two.
    6. atelier cologne orange sanguine (sample, ret. $120 for 3.3oz) -- this smells so good. it doesn't smell perfumey at all, more like fresh citrus fruits and mint (but it says geranium...?).
      repurchase? maybe
    7. 'coupon' for an extra 50 points on the next in-store purchase
    approximate product value: ~$27+

    work: 11 months!

hi all! we have miraculously made it to the 11 month mark! and i still have no new news about myself or changes in how i feel about my job, etc, etc. i am however upset at the fact that my cohort and partner in crime S has been kicked off our project while other people who are continually making a lot of mistakes and not fixing them themselves still remain. anyway, so S is now looking into other job options (new project, career, and school), which is kind of sad. also two more of my friends have recently quit. the two guys from my first project that i believe i mentioned were the 'a little bit experienced people from our office' or something to that effect...they found better jobs elsewhere. actually one of them told me about two months ago that he wasn't sure if he'd still be with us by the time may rolled around, and what do you know? and the other, well it was actually a surprise to me and i didn't think he was actively pursuing something else. but what can i say, our office is a revolving door and everyone has similar yet vastly different experiences coming in and out of our office. a third person who joined our office in january in my functional area also recently quit. the contract for client they originally had him lined up for fell through or something and he--for whatever reason--couldn't join our project. so he found a better paying job elsewhere, doing something more aligned with his interests and degree. so... i'm glad for everyone...but S... that they're seeing all the sides of our office (which i'm pretty sure our office is not very telling of our company as a whole) and bailing as soon as they are able.
anyway, like i said, i haven't had any real changes in my attitude about my job aside from the people i mentioned above who can't do their own stuff. i probably haven't really mentioned it on here, but recently i was talking to one of my friends who quit in march. and i was telling him, that this project is taking over my life. like i have no work-life separation anymore because i literally am dreaming about code. and he tells me, hey that's the sign of a good developer there! and that's got me thinking, i never ever thought that i'd be programming my whole life. realistically idk what i even want to do (ain't that the truth no matter what age you are!) but at the same time, i am comfortable and ok with where i am. yes things are still hectic because i'm new, but i'm actually learning things at a very fast pace relative to others. and as i said last time, i'm becoming increasingly more capable of answering the newer guys' questions. a couple weeks ago, i met with my manager for like a quarterly progress thing and he said he's been hearing good things about me from the client. that they're impressed that i'm learning everything so fast in such a short period of time (4 months!) since my functional area is relatively new tech (a few years in the States), and i didn't know java really (still don't totally, lol). so that was super exciting to hear, especially after one of my project leads told me that himself a few weeks before then too.
anywho, that's how things are going for me. hopefully you guys out there are doing well too! ~Lin-chan ^.~

random sidenote: i keep getting two songs stuck in my head lately..like nearly every day. and they're not like the best things ever, but idk. panic at the disco don't threaten me with a good time and falling in reverse good girls bad guys.

edit: by the way, did i mention that i chopped my hair off last month? i mean i posted it on instagram and my april hauls, ipsy, and sephora play! posts should have been telling, but that was ponytail #4 going to locks of love!

    may 2016 ipsy bag

hi guys! today, my may IPSY BAG* arrived!! w00t! (theme: destination chic) and so far it's lookin like a winner! ~Lin-chan ^.~
    here's my impressions:
    1. smashbox x-rated mascara (.1oz--mini, ret. $22 for .3oz [$7.33]) -- i was very interested in this mascara when it came out, and i'm excited to try it!
      • likelihood to repurchase: maybe
    2. pacifica natural mineral coconut eyeshadow trio in natural beauty (skinny dip, crush, lovely) (.07oz--near full size, ret. $12 for .1oz [$8.40]) -- it's not entirely clear which shade is which, but based on research online and the way it was written on the box, i'm going to venture to say that skinny dip is the top, whitish one, crush is the coppery one, and lovely is the plummy one. skinny dip is your typical chalky pearly whitish shade that's really close to my natural skintone. crush and lovely actually were the shockers here, considering the formula of the previous pacifica shadows ipsy's sent me. they're super gorgeous and pigmented without primer! so nice!
      • likelihood to repurchase: not if it's this difficult to figure out what shade is what and they're not all in a nice set like this (these aren't currently sold together like this)
        • hikari cosmetics shimmer bronzer in radiate (.25oz--full size, ret. $17) -- cheap and bulky packaging aside, this is a super pigmented product! i'm actually blown away by how pigmented each quadrant is, and swirrling them together is so pretty too! can't wait to try this out. this product is marketed for use as individual shades or blended together for both eyes and cheeks.
          • likelihood to repurchase: maybe, might not have to
        • eva nyc hungry hair oil treatment (.4oz--mini, ret. $20 for 3.38oz [$2.37]) -- i'm definitely very interested in trying this out. the scent is amazing!
          • likelihood to repurchase: maybe
        • the organic pharmacy antioxidant lip balm (7ml--full size, ret. £12 [~$17]) -- i typically go for waxy, emollient balms that stick around for a while, and this ain't one of them. this is a very thin balm that gets immediately absorbed into your lips and i hate it. it has a light scent to it, and has a kind of vaseline look to it (not the feel!). i'm not a fan though.
          • likelihood to repurchase: no
        • ipsy bag -- i love that they sent out different color variations of this bag and that i got the blue one! the travel theme is super cute! not totally sure how i feel about the envelope style, but it's still functional.
        • card with company info/discount codes (some codes are case sensitive)

        our 4th hellofresh box!

hi all! today i bring you my review of our fourth hellofresh box! the meals we chose this time are:
        1. Shrimp Saganaki with Spicy Marinara, Feta, and Israeli Couscous

          dinner 1: shrimp saganaki
i'm already a huge fan of couscous, but israeli couscous...so much better! the only major thing i'd change with this recipe is that the onion was huge and the recipe called for the whole thing.. i hate onions, and i spent more time picking them out of this than actually eating the dish. i mean look at that picture...it's all onions! the shrimp (though large) are hiding under the feta! i'm not sure how much of the chili flakes the paul put in, but it was just above my tolerance level and can also be adjusted in the future. also, i think i'd rather the sauce tossed with the couscous before serving. some of the couscous clumped together. this was so super easy to make and we can't wait to make it again!
-- to anyone interested in making this in the future, the "1 box" of crushed tomatoes is about 13.8oz

          dinner 2: pork tenderlion
this was also a very easy recipe! i guess i'm not a huge fan of dry meat..and this one is no exception. i like pork, but not if it comes out dry or has no sauce. this one, i did squeeze some of the extra lemon onto it, but i don't think it was quite good enough. i definitely enjoyed the potatoes & zucchini, that was awesome. so i think we will probably make this recipe again, and maybe cook the pork differently or something.

          dinner 3: steak salad
this was by far, the most complicated salad ever. who takes an hour to make a salad??? first there was roasting the peppers, then the garlic and rosemary, then cooking the steak and slicing and toasting the bread... such a hassle. the salad was pretty good, but not worth the effort we put into it.
